Swallows & Amazons Themed Cake
This project was close to my heart and made me feel rather nostalgic for my childhood years. The cake was designed as a surprise for a lovely lady's birthday. The details I'd been given were that she loves being in the water and her husband had mentioned a possible theme of Swallows & Amazons.
Living close to the river in Kingston upon Thames, helps me draw upon inspiration from nature and the outdoors. And an instant idea came to mind about how I could reproduce a 3D version of Claire's original Swallows & Amazons book cover. We were in luck that her husband was able to get a photo of Claire's original childhood copy and email it over to me without Claire catching on.
I brought the colours and patterns to life using a watercolour painting style, all with edible food colourings. The boats were modelled out of gumpaste, along with the sails, and the characters were painted onto sugarpaste to look exactly as they do on the book cover. An edible gold-dusted rope, again made out of sugarpaste, was wrapped around the cake base to add to the nautical theme. Hopefully you can see the details a little more clearly here.
